Lecture 7 IRR17

    Cards (11)

    • Made for:
      • The protection of workers
      • Protection of members of the public
      • Protection of outside workers there for specific purposes
      • Measures to produce a safe working environment
      • Demonstration of adequate management of radiation protection
      • Critical examination of new equipment
      • Both sets of regulations are enforced under  Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
      • Implications ( this means everyone in any dental practice bears some responsibility for radiation protection)
    • HSE?
Health and Safety Executive - radiation employers have to register with them 28 days before practice opens or re-register if new owner/management or address changes
    • Risk assessment in IRR17?
      • Every room with an x-ray machine must have its’ own risk assessment document
      • Hazards must be identified
      • Size of the risk (potential harm to persons)
      • Number of people potentially affected
      • Solutions must be written down in local schemes of work or standard operating procedures
    • what is a contingency plan?
}  What do we do if there is an accident
Switch off at the mains immediately
      }  Notify the RPA
}  Place an out of order notice on the machine
Additional steps are required if high doses are found to have been delivered
    • Dose Restriction.
All radiation employers must do all that they can to keep doses to staff ALARP
      • Reduce number of people
      • Safe barriers
      • Safe place to stand
      • Test equipment
      • Monitor doses
    • Dose Limitation: specific dose limits are set for all radiation employees.
Within dental installations these limits are
      }     1mSv        0.3mSv      1mSv for term
    • Training
The training requirement is to ensure that all staff have the knowledge to keep themselves and others safe and to understand the need for following all of the employers procedures.
}  Basic safety training must include
      Nature of ionising radiations
      Potential hazards (biological effects)
      Protection measures
      Regulatory responsibilities
Restricted areas are clearly pointed out
    • Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA)
}  Must be external to the practice
}  Must be accredited every 5 years
      }  Practice must check accreditation
}  Must be appointed in writing
Only provides advice and is not required
    •  Radiation Protection Supervisors
      ·       Must have the required knowledge
      ·       Must work in the practice
      ·       Cannot cover multi sites
      ·       Must be on site for the majority of working week
      ·       Must have authority to act (personal not necessarily seniority)
    • Controlled areas must be clearly identified
      ·       Any place where a person could get 3/10 of their annual dose limit
      ·       That is anywhere near an x-ray machine
      ·       60/65kV 1m around the x-ray tube and patient
      ·       70kV 1.5 metres round the x-ray tube and patient

Each controlled area must have own set of Local Rule, bSystems of work and Standard operating instructions
    • Staff Dose Monitoring
}  Only legally required for Classified Persons (that’s anyone likely to receive 3/10 of their annual dose limit
}  Advised in cases where one person is undertaking 100 Intra or 50 extra-oral examinations per week
}  If a monitor is provided it must be worn
A dose monitor does not protect a person form radiation and cannot prevent a dose occurring.
