After assassination attempts increased in the late 1870s, AII responded by declaring a state of emergency and dividing the country into military style governor generalships
There was relaxation of censorship in 1861, but quickly tightened again following student protests
Secret police - the Third section hunter down opposition to the regime. Following the organised show trials of the 50 and 193, from 1878, political trials were heard in secret in front of military courts.
