Chromatography

Subdecks (1)

Cards (11)

  • chromatography seperates dyes and chemicals based upon their solubility
  • Chromatography method:
    1. A pencil line is drawn at bottom of a piece of chromatography paper (pencil line won't move)
    2. mixture is dotted onto the line
    3. end is placed into a solvent below pencil line
    4. solvent moves up paper and carries dye with it
    5. most soluble dyes are carried the furthest and least = shortest
  • if dot of mixture has not moved up paper -> not soluble in solvent
  • pure substances = contain only one substance
  • reference line is drawn in a substance not soluble in the solvent
  • the same substance will travel the same distance
  • dot that has travelled furthest = most soluble in the solvent
  • the reference line doesn't always start at 0 so be careful!
