cancer is caused by uncontrollable growth and division. the uncontrollablegrowthanddivisionisaresultofthechangesthatcellsgothrough. and it can resultintumours.
There is 2 types of tumours.
Benign- this type grows until no more room, the tumour stays in one place (usually within a membrane) and does not spread to other healthy tissues in body. it is normally not dangerous.
Malignant- tumour grows and spreads to healthytissues. cells can breakoff and spread to other parts of the tissue by the bloodstream. Malignant cells invade other cells in other parts of body and form secondary tumours. They are dangerous and fatal- cancerous
RISK FACTORS FOR CANCER
Smoking- linked to lung, mouth, bowel, stomach and cervical cancer.
obesity- linked to liver, bowel and kidney cancer. the second most preventable cancer after smoking.
UV Exposure- people often expose to radiation from sun which causes cancer. Thus people in hot climate, people that go outside a lot, people that use sun beds are more likely to have skin cancer
viral infection- infection with some virus show to increase chances of getting cancer. E.g Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C can cause liver cancer
RISK FACTORS CAN ALSO BE LINKED TO GENETICS
Sometimes you can inherit faulty genes, making you more susceptible to cancer
mutation in BR-CA gene linked to and increase chance of getting breast and ovarian cancer
cancer survival rates have recently increases, due to medical advances, better treatment, being able to diagnose cancer earlier and screening for cancer.
