  • cancer is caused by uncontrollable growth and division. the uncontrollable growth and division is a result of the changes that cells go through. and it can result in tumours.
  • There is 2 types of tumours.
  • Benign- this type grows until no more room, the tumour stays in one place (usually within a membrane) and does not spread to other healthy tissues in body. it is normally not dangerous.
  • Malignant- tumour grows and spreads to healthy tissues. cells can break off and spread to other parts of the tissue by the blood stream. Malignant cells invade other cells in other parts of body and form secondary tumours. They are dangerous and fatal- cancerous
  • RISK FACTORS FOR CANCER

    • obesity- linked to liver, bowel and kidney cancer. the second most preventable cancer after smoking.

    • viral infection- infection with some virus show to increase chances of getting cancer. E.g Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C can cause liver cancer
  • RISK FACTORS CAN ALSO BE LINKED TO GENETICS
    • Sometimes you can inherit faulty genes, making you more susceptible to cancer
    • mutation in BR-CA gene linked to and increase chance of getting breast and ovarian cancer
  • cancer survival rates have recently increases, due to medical advances, better treatment, being able to diagnose cancer earlier and screening for cancer.
