  • The doctrine of the separation of powers divides the institutions of government into three branches: legislative, executive and judicial:
  • Judiciary - interprets laws, makes judgements about the law
    • Made up of the Judges of the Federal Courts
    • Judgements are made about trials and sentences
  • Executive - has the power to enforce laws
    • Made up of the Prime Minister, Ministers, King and Governor General
    • Laws are enforced through Federal police, Border Force and other Government Agencies
    • Must provide services required by the law - healthcare, social services, military and so on
  • Legislature - has the power to make and change laws
    • Made up of the Parliament, the King, and the Governor-General
  • Separation of Powers is important because it ensures that no one branch has too much power.
