Sound, heat, and light are other forms of energy that may be explained in terms of the movements of smaller objects
Sound
Produced by vibrating bodies, like the strings of a guitar. Without any medium, sound cannot travel.
Heat or thermal energy
The energy from the movement of tiny particles in matter
Light
The only energy that we can readily see. It is also produced by vibrations of very small particles in matter.
How sound is transmitted and heard
1. Vibrating air molecules pass on energy to adjacent air molecules
2. Vibrating air causes the eardrum to also vibrate
3. Small bones carry the energy to the brain through the auditory nerve
Thermal energy
The sum of the energies from the moving molecules in an object
Heat flow
Moves from an object of high temperature to an object of lower temperature. Stops once the two objects are of the same temperature.
Electromagnetic (EM) waves
Energy from the sun reaches the Earth in the form of light or radiant energy that travels by EM waves
Electromagnetic spectrum
Radio waves
Infrared radiation
Visible light
Ultraviolet
X-rays
Gamma-rays
Light energy cannot move objects on its own, but it can be converted to another form of energy, like electrical energy, to make objects move and function
