Ionic bonds

Cards (20)

  • What is ionic bonding?
    The transfer of electrons between a metal and a non-metal which produces anions and cations.
  • Cations have a positive charge
  • Anions have a negative charge
  • Ions are formed when atoms lose or gain electrons to form charged particles.
  • Metals tend to lose electrons, forming positively charged ions (cations). Non-metals tend to gain electrons, forming negatively charged ions (anions)
  • Two oppositely charged ions are attracted to eachother by electrostatic forces forming electrostatic attraction called an ionic bond, which is very strong, forming an ionic compound.
  • What is the structure of an electronic compound
    Lattice structure consisting of a regular arrangement of electrons held togeather by electrostatic forces (ionic bonds) between oppositely charged ions.
  • The lattice structure has high melting points as it takes a lot of energy to break the strong ionic bonds holding the ions together.
  • When are the endings -ide and -ade used?
    used for the negatively charged ions in a compound
  • What does the ending -ide mean?
    Means the compound contains 2 elements (one is a non metal charged ion).
  • What does the ending -ate mean?
    Means the compound contains atleast 3 elements, one is oxygen
  • Oxide->involves O2-ion
  • Hydroxide -> involves OH1- ion
  • Halide -> involves a -1 halide ion
  • Nitrate->involves NO3 1-ion
  • Carbonate->involvesCO3 2- ion
    • Sulfate -> involves SO 2- ion
  • Ionic compounds conduct electricity when melted or dissolved in water as ions are free charges that can move around within the solid. This means they can carry electrical currents through the material.
  • What is the ionic compound for potassium chloride
    NaCl
  • What is the formula for a nitrate ion?
    NO3-
