Ozymandias is a sonnet because of his egotistical love for himself and his love for power
  • Structure of Ozymandias
Ozymanidas has a Volta ( because it shows the shift in the poem ) "nothing beside remains.". Ozymandias thinks he is a god but that changes. This represents how your life can switch and change very quickly . The caesura ephesises the point
  • " my name is Ozymandias king of kings " - Ozymandias
It is a hyperbole because in this quote he is exagerating and over the top . It is juxtaposition because Ozymandias believes he is god like and he is all powerful and it juxtaposes with the quote " nothing beside remains " . It is symbolic because it holds the idea of a king and it is like he is worshiping power and he wants the title to himself and appear god like
  • " A shattered visage lies " - Ozymandias

The adjective " Shattered " emphasises how broken the statue is which gives the impression that he is beyond repairable . Nature has made him " shattered " and his statue was destroyed by time . this quote shows how nature and god is in control
  • Rhyming in ozymandias
the lack of the rhyming couplet at the end of the sonnet shows like the statue Ozymandias power fades quickly

the verb " I hear " implies he can hear everyones manacles and everyone is being controlled also there is juxtaposition with the verb " I hear " because is he hearing his own mantles or is he hearing there's because he thinks he is free but so is everyone else . " manacles " is symbolic because manacles are chains implying that everyone is being controlled and nobody is free
  • " his hands which do not tremble then though seem to now " - war photographer
the enjambment empheisies the never ending memory of the things he has seen . the verb " tremble " is linked to fear and nerves and he is now struggling with the memories he has from the pictures ( ptsd ) . the juxtaposition from no hand trembling to hands trembling shows a change has occurred and a change in setting mimics the change in feeling
  • " a strangers features faintly start to twist before his eyes " - war photographer
this quote is foreshadowing the eventual downfall because he is now seeing things which links to ptsd . the verb twist suggests the victims are moving and twisting which could suggest they are like ghosts haunting him and being haunted by the memories
  • " a hundred agonies in black and white " - war photographer

the pictures are a symbol of pain and hardship . the metaphor represents the victims pain it also suggests the immense amount of suffering that we do not know about which the photographer is trying to educate us through his photos
  • " bullets smacking the belly cut of the air " - Bayonet charge
this quote is a metaphor . the onomatopoeia " smacking " shows he is running and can hear bullets going off text to him which shows he is not trained because he carries on running instead of taking cover
  • " He was running like a man who has jumped up in the dark and runs " - Bayonet charge
this quote shows he does not know what he is doing . the adjective " dark " symbolises that his eyes are blinded and he can not see the truth and can not see why he is here . the whole quote is a simile
  • " king , honour , human dignity , ect dropped like luxuries in a yelling alarm " - bayonet charge
this is a Volta because everything he has been told to fight for was dropped in that moment of time all the lies he had been fed he " dropped " it and opened his eyes and is free . " King , honour and human dignity " were the things he was told he was fighting for because you fight for your king and the respect of your people back home . the quote juxtaposes what a solider is meant to do
  • " I see every round as it rips through his life " - remains
a graphic hyperbole is used to demonstrate the lack of glory and honour this killing is not pretty but still a matter of fact it is a violent death and shot to kill shows you the viciousness with which these soldiers killed this man and it was like they were hunting an animal
  • " blink " " sleep " " dream " - remains

these three words create a semantic feild which represents peace because when you " blink " " sleep " and " dream " you are at peace and when you can rest . the semantic field shows you how this man is not physically affected but mentally affected which is the Volta because he does not have this predator mindset anymore and now he cannot sleep and relax
  • " near to the knocks , here and now , his bloody life in my bloody hands " - remains

this quote shows the idea of ptsd and how his hands are a symbol of his crimes . the repetition of " bloody " emphasises how the killing is fresh in his mind . it contains cyclical structure because in the beginning he was near to the knuckle and had blood on his hands but it was not the same effect because he was loving it then but now it is the idea that this crime can not be washed because the mind can not get over it
  • " smiles stopped together " - my last duchess
the sibilance gives the poem a sisister feel because of the effect of the ' s ' sound . and as soon as he started bossing her around she stopped smiling at him . the caesura gives the poem an irregular pause but the irregular pause emphasises how her life came to an unplanned pause
  • " too easily impressed " - my last duchess
it is a hyperbole and this quote goes against the ideas of a patriarchal man . complaining about how his wife did not treat him well and he seems insecure go himself and what his wife felt about him which juxtaposes the idea of patriarchy
  • " since none puts by the curtains I have drawn for you , but I " - my last duchess

he is talking to the picture on the wall and he thinks he has power over her by moving the curtains . the use of juxtaposition makes him think that he has control over her but the fact she still plays on his mind shows the opposite it shows that she controls him because he is dying for any bit of power to the point where he thinks he has control over her by putting a curtain over her picture . the use of enjambment highlights her never ending control
