parallel flow

• water and blood flow over and through the lamellar in the same direction
• at first, there is a much larger concentration gradient, as there is a very high oxygen concentration in the water, so diffusion occurs
• when equilibrium is reached, no more oxygen diffuses into the blood
• less oxygen is absorbed by the blood overall as diffusion only happens in the first part of the lamellae
• up to 50% saturation
