Function of neuron's
To receive and send information around the body by sending signals both
electrically
and chemically.
Sensory Neuron
Found in receptors like the skin, eyes, ears and tongue.
Connects the
PNS
to the
CNS
Relay Neuron
Found in
brain
and
spinal cord
Connects other neuron's together allowing them to communicate
Motor Neuron
Found in the
CNS
Connect the CNS to organs, glands and muscles (
effectors
)
Dendrites
Receives impulses from
neighbouring
neuron's
and carry signal towards the
cell body
.
Axon
Carries the signal away from the cell body down the
neuron
.
Axon terminal
Where the signal has to cross a
synapse
o the next neuron.
Myelin sheath
A fatty layer that surrounds the
axon
and speeds up transmission of signal.
Cell body
Contains the
nucleus
and the genetic material of the cell.
Nodes of ranvier
The gaps between the
myelin sheaths
. They speed up transmission by allowing the signal to jump across the gaps on
axon
.
