weather

Cards (10)

  • Weather
Basically refers to the short-term changes in the atmosphere. It affects our daily life an activities.
  • Climate
Is the average weather conditions, including temperature and precipitation, in an area over a long period of time.
  • Factors that affect Climate
    • Solar Energy and Latitude
    • Temperature and Precipitation
    • Topography
    • Elevation
    • Large Bodies of water and ocean currents
    • Prevailing Winds
  • Temperature
The degree or intensity of heat present in an object. Temperature affects the oceans, weather patterns, and precipitation.
  • Precipitation
The amount of water that falls on Earth's surface in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
  • Latitude
An area's distance, north or south, from the equator. Different latitudes on the Earth's surface would receive different amounts of solar energy. Places located at high latitude are far from the equator so they receive less solar energy. Those places at low latitude are close to the equator so they get more solar energy.
  • Prevailing winds
Winds that blow most frequently across a certain region. Different regions on Earth have different prevailing wind directions. Prevailing winds affect the amount of precipitation that an area receives. If the prevailing winds form warm air, they may carry moisture.
  • Topography
Has a large impact on the temperature and precipitation of an area. If an area is close to a body of water, it tends to have a milder climate. Mountainous areas tend to have more extreme weather because mountains act as natural barriers to wind movements and rain clouds.
  • Elevation
The height of an area above sea level. As elevation increases, temperature tends to decrease.
  • Rain shadow
A dry area on the side of a mountain opposite to the wind; it's where moist air gets blocked by the mountain.
