week 9 : Throat, mouth, and sinuses

• mouth- an oval shaped cavity
• throat ( pharynx ) connects nose, mouth, and esophagus
• lips- muscular fold that surrounds the mouth
• teeth- used for chewing
• deciduous- 20 teeth A.K.A baby teeth
• Permanent - 32 teeth, 28 if molar isn't erected
• tongue- controlled by CN 12
• taste is controlled by CN 7
• facial is controlled by CN 9
• Hard palate- floor of the nasal cavity
• soft palate- elevates when swallowing so food and water cant enter nasopharynx
• uvula- fleshy cone-like structure
• salivary glands- produces saliva to turn starch into maltose
• cheilitis- Drying, cracking of lips that causes lip licking
• cheilosis- fissure at the corner of lips that depicts vitamin B deficiency
• Halitosis- gastrointestinal problems and poor oral hygiene
• chancre- painless ulcer
• angioedima- allergic response
• herpes simplex- herpes viral infection
• gingival hyperplasia- plaque buildup
• gum recession- aggressive brushing
• apthous ulcer- benign and non contagious
• leukoplakia- white mucosal thickening
• petechiae- small red dots
• glossitis- inflammation of the tongue
• hairy tongue- cause of intake of antibiotic that contains bismuth
• postnasal drainage- yellowish to greenish discharge
• pharyngeal diptheria- gray membrane
• exudative pharyngitis- associated with chlamydia and gonorrhea
• erythema- inflammatory response
• herphangina- scattered vesicle
