Non-diegetic cyclical voice-overs. At the start, Renton may appear unlikeable and rude through his performance and dialogue. 'Fucking big television'. Renton breaks the 4th wall and then laughs at the spectators. Rejects any dominant hegenomic values in favour of heroin.

At the end, Renton is likeable, but perhaps not trustworthy. Renton passing over the bridge= Symbolic metaphor of Renton changing. However, Renton still laughs at the spectators, claiming he's going to 'Going straight and choosing life' 'I'm going to be just like you, the job, the family, the fucking big television'

Hyper-realism toilet scene - tells us the spectators the length Renton is willing to go to to get drugs. 'The Worst Toilet in Scotland' - disgusting yet comedic, as it juxtaposes with the dream-like non-diegetic soundtrack. The visual metaphor allows us to sympathise with Renton. Repeated throughout with the montage of the 'quitting junk scene'

Repetition and binary opposition between Renton and Tommy. The props and mise-en-scene. Tommy towards the start is fit, he's working out, lives in an ordered apartment, this contrasts with the chaos of Renton's apartment. Stealing the tape is funny at the time, but it does lead to Tommy's death

Tommy's apartment after Renton stole the tape reflects Tommy's health. His apartment is labelled 'Aids junkie scum' and 'plague' in graffiti and Tommy is sleeping on the floor on a dirty mattress. The roles have been reversed, with Tommy now dying, and Renton is now a picture of health
