    Supposed to be given every three years as mandated by the rules of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)
  • Nomination process for National Artist
    1. Announcement made by NCCA and CCP for opening of nominations
    2. Artist must be a Filipino citizen or at least at the time of the nomination
    3. Artist who has passed on can still be nominated if he/she was a Filipino before death
    4. Artist should have contributed "to building a Filipino sense of nationhood" as seen in their works
    5. Artist should have led the way in a new and creative expression or style, separating themselves from others and in turn influencing other generations of artists
    6. Artist's work should be noteworthy and an embodiment of excellence, further enriching his/her chosen field of creative expression
    7. Artist should be critically acclaimed and accepted by legitimate institutions and peers
    8. Nominations studied and reviewed by NCCA and CCP, then recommendations submitted to the President of the Philippines
    9. President releases proclamation granting respective rank and title to the nominees
    10. Awardees conferred in a ceremony arranged by the NCCA and CCP secretariat

    • Medal bearing the insignia of National Artist as well as a citation
    • Cash gift of PHP100,000 to the living artist and PHP 75,000 for those who were recognized after their death, which is given to the heir of the awardee
