• Inside:

  • rainbow band - emission spectrum
  • light passes through prism and refracts into particular pattern
  • bands are in DIFFERENT PLACES based on the ELEMENT
• Reference spectra: emission spectra from known metal ions
• each element has a unique spectrum
• 1. energy is given which emits light
  2. light passes through prism and specific wavelengths are emitted
  3. the emitted light is analysed by splitting into its component colours
