conformity and obedience

• the chameleon effect: we mimic (unconsciously) expressions, postures, and voice tones
• conformity: adopting attitudes and behaviors of the poeple around us; adjusting our behavior to coincide with a group standard
• Soloman Asch: conformity experiment; participants are given a test, the people before them give the wrong answer so the participant also gives the wrong answer
• normative social influence: influence resulting from a person's desire to gain approval or avoid disapproval
• informational social influence: refers to behavior that is motivated by the desire to be correct
• Stanely Milgram: Standford prison study; participants were given roles to play; got violent and out of control quickly
