Binding Energy

• Binding energy:

  • The work that must be done to separate a nucleus into its constituent neutrons and protons
  • When a nucleus forms from separate neutrons and protons, energy is released as the strong nuclear force does work pulling the nucleons together
  • The energy released is equal to the binding energy of the nucleus
• Mass defect:

  • The difference between the mass of a separated nucleon and the mass of the nucleus
