Carnivore vs herbivore

• Carnivores:

  • eat meat
  • protein is digested in the stomach
  • amino acids are absorbed in the ileum
  • shorter, less complex gut
• Herbivores:

  • eat plants
  • cellulose can’t be digested by herbivores as they do not produce cellulase
  • more complex gut so symbiotic bacteria can break down cellulose as they can produce cellulase
