• Other anaesthetic routes - epidural:

  • insertion of anaesthetic into epidural space
  • often left in situ for "top-up" of anaesthesia
  • e.g. childbirth/pelvis or lower limb operations
• Other anaesthetic routes - spinal

  • injection of local anaesthetic into sub-arachnoid space to block specific nerve roots
  • suitable alternative to general anaesthetic in high risk patients
  • orthopaedic operations (below the waist)
