In February
1913
, the Romanovs celebrated the
300th
anniversary of them gaining power.
There were huge nationwide celebrations.
In St
Petersburg
, there were huge crowds, dignitaries from all over the Empire and leaders of the
Orthodox
Church.
Factories were shut for the day, free meals were given out and
2,000
prisoners were given amnesty and released.
The Tsar then toured his Empire following the route of the 1st Romanov ruler
Mikhail
I in 1613, ending in
Moscow.
The tercentenary celebrations were all a
propaganda
coup.
The tercentenary celebrations gave the
Tsar
and his family a false sense of their popularity.
Tsarina
Alexandra
famously said "we need to merely show
ourselves
and at once their hearts are ours".
