  • In February 1913, the Romanovs celebrated the 300th anniversary of them gaining power.
    • There were huge nationwide celebrations.
    • In St Petersburg, there were huge crowds, dignitaries from all over the Empire and leaders of the Orthodox Church.
    • Factories were shut for the day, free meals were given out and 2,000 prisoners were given amnesty and released.
    • The Tsar then toured his Empire following the route of the 1st Romanov ruler Mikhail I in 1613, ending in Moscow.
  • The tercentenary celebrations were all a propaganda coup.
  • The tercentenary celebrations gave the Tsar and his family a false sense of their popularity.
    • Tsarina Alexandra famously said "we need to merely show ourselves and at once their hearts are ours".
