  • Plekhanov was a key figure in the Populist movement in the 1870s.
  • Plekhanov was exiled to Geneva.
    • In 1880, he studied Marxism and co-founded Emancipation of Labour in 1883.
  • Emancipation of Labour merged with other socialist groups in 1898 which formed the SDs.
  • Plekhanov wrote "Socialism and the Political Struggle" in 1883 and "Our Differences" in 1885.
    • Many communists in the 20th century considered him to be the Father of Russian Marxism.
  • Plekhanov worked in exile with Lenin and Martov.
  • Plekhanov sided with the Mensheviks in the SD split in 1903 and never approved of the Bolsheviks taking power.
