  • The Russian people wanted the war to end.
    • It had brought hardship and suffering.
  • Ending the war would come at a high cost.
    • Russia needed money from its allies to keep functioning and the requirement of the funding was staying in the war.
  • The PG was committed to fighting on.
  • The Soviet also rejected an immediate peace which would put Russia at the mercy of imperial Germany.
    • However, they also rejected a continuation of war which aimed to conquer and expand into Eastern Europe and Turkey.
    • They agreed on a largely defensive war to protect Russia's territory.
  • A consequence of continuing the war was that the food and fuel shortages continued.
    • Workers wages continued to be eroded in value by the continuing inflation.
    • The PG became increasingly unpopular with workers.
  • Desertions from the Army also increased.
