  • Critical reading steps
    1. Before you read: Scan and look for important information
    2. While you read: Interact with the author, take notes, highlight key points
    3. After you read: Revisit annotations, summarize the material
    4. Responding to the text: Evaluate and analyze the arguments, develop your own ideas
  • Characteristics of critical readers
    • Spend time reflecting on the reading material
    • Evaluate and solve problems rather than simply compiling certain facts
    • Think logically
    • Seek out the truth
    • Eager to express their thoughts
    • Look at alternative views about a topic
    • Open to new ideas

    • Recognize errors and good arguments

  • Ways to become a critical reader
    • Annotate what you read- writing on the text
    • Outline the text- identify the main points
    • Summarize the text- Get the main gist or point of the text read
    • Evaluate the text- Question the purpose, intention, and assumptions. Check if there are pieces of evidence that are valid and credible
