  • Self-understanding and self- awareness. A good counselor has a good degree of introspection, self- examination or self-exploration. He should be aware of his needs to be able to be sensitive to the needs

  • Mental Health Counselor - life can be difficult at times. people usually have to deal with such things as balancing family and career, paying bills and staying healthy
  • Pastoral Counselors - are trained ministers of faith who are responsible for tending to the physical and emotional needs of their followers or congregation
  • School Counselors - are responsible for all aspects of their student's educational life from academic achievement and social adjustment to career selection and development
  • Rehabilitation Counselors - these counselors are responsible for treating clients with physical, mental, or emotional issues so that they can live as independently as possible
  • Suicide Intervention Counselor - these counselors have one of the most stressful and at the same time rewarding jobs. they are trained to handle clients with depression and suicidal issues
  • Transformational Counselors - offers an alternative form of mental and physical healing that focuses on self improvement, spiritual healing, and deeper life satisfaction
  • In hospitals. counselors maybe hired to help patients get through different psychological and behavioral issues
  • In mental health centers. counselors may provide individual or group therapy sessions in a mental health facility.
  • In residential care facilities. to provide counseling services to people living in a temporary environment wherein there is a need for continuous supervision
  • In prison and correctional facilities. the prison system employs counselor to provide individual and group therapy for individual who are jailed, or living in a correctional facility
  • In the corporate settings. a counselor can assume position in human resources or public. counselors with bachelors degree may be hired in industrial sectors.
  • In school. counselors have students to better deal the challenges of growing up and successfully complete their studies
  • In career centers - graduates with a vocational or career counseling degree can work in career centers associated with high schools, colleges, and universities
  • In Non-Profit or social service agencies. to provide counseling services centered on mental health, rehabilitation, substances abuse, and other areas of social works, counselors with undergraduate and graduate degree can find work here
  • In religious institutions. for counselors who specialized in combining traditional mental health counseling with Christian faith can work in private practice and/or in religious work environments as in a church
  • In public or private practice. those with a Ph.D. in counseling can become a licensed professional counselor in a public or private practice
  • Rights of clients. counselors who demonstrate their respect for the rights of their clients build a good relationship with them
  • Rights of informed consent. this right demands that client be given enough information choices about entering and/or continuing the counselor-client relationship
  • Minor's rights. another important issue in a minor's right to treatment. include here would be issues concerning parental consent and confidentiality
  • Right to a referral. when a counselor believe that he is not qualified to handle a case, or feels that the type or duration of treatment is too limited for what the client's should receive, it is the counselor's prerogative to refer the client to another who can provide the utmost help
  • Duty to warn and protect. there are two significant duties/responsibilities of all counselors: a.) the duty to protect other people from potentially dangerous clients, b.) duty to protect clients from themselves
