27 October 1917 - Decrees

• Decree on Peace

  • Called for an immediate truce in the war and peace with "no annexations or indemnities".
  • There was an armistice in November 1917 followed by demobilisation.
• Decree of Land

  • Gave peasants the right to seize land from the landlords without compensation and to divide it up as they wished.
  • Private ownership of land was abolished with it now belonging to the "whole people".
  • This was key to gaining peasant support and weakening the grip of the popular SRs in the countryside.
• An 8 hour working day and social insurance was introduced for workers.
