  • Certain drugs of abuse produce pleasure or euphoria.
  • Euphoria - the high sensation of feeling good and extremely relaxed. It is a sensation brought about by the chemical reactions of the neurotransmitters in the brain.
  • Gateway drugs - accepted and legal with restrictions.
  • Gateway drugs - puts a person at risk of using more dangerous and illicit drugs.
  • Depressants - also known as downers or sedatives in the medical field, suppress or slow down the central nervous system. It is used to treat anxiety, mental disorders, and sleeping disorders like insomnia.

  • Tranquilizers - mild depressants used to treat anxiety.

  • Caffeine - a stimulant that is found in soft drinks, energy drinks, coffee, tea and chocolate.
  • Illicit stimulants include cocaine and methamphetamine or shabu.
  • Narcotics - also known as “painkillers”. They also induce sleepiness. They are administered to patients with mental problems. They are also given to cancer patients to relieve severe pain.
  • Narcotics include cocaine, heroin and marijuana.
  • Hallucinogens - they create hallucinations. They distort what is real.
  • Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin and mescaline are some of the common hallucinogens.
  • Inhalants - found in common household chemical products. Huffed or sniffed.
    Similar to effects of alcohol intoxication.
  • Voluntary - The drug dependent or patient decides on his/her own to be examined and is willingly admitted in a rehabilitation center.
  • Voluntary through representations - The drug dependent or patient is willingly admitted to a rehabilitation center for treatment but wants to be accompanied by a trusted adult member of the family, relative or legal guardian.
  • Compulsory confinement - The drug dependent or patient is in a life-threatening situation or is a threat to his/her family, thus needs to be confined.
  • Intake and admission - the process of determining whether a particular rehabilitation center is good fit for the patient.
  • Diagnostic evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation proper - undergo some diagnostic tests or screening to best determine how the program can most optimally tailor its treatment.
  • Detoxification - the process by which the body clears itself of drugs.
  • Medical and psychiatric treatment - formal assessment and referral to drug addiction treatment.
  • Psychological and social services - most common form of treatment is behavioral therapy, which involves some combination of individual group and family therapy.
  • Educational or vocational services - on opportunities shall be made available to patients for the purposes of improving their skills, interest, and capabilities.
  • Spiritual development services - this will help them feel more supported as they seek healing from addiction.
  • Sports and recreation - it provides facilities for sports and recreation to offer patients the opportunity to engage in constructive activities and to establish peer relationship.
  • After-care and follow-up services - after patients have completed their rehabilitation program, they are not finished with recovery. It is a journey that requires a lifelong support.
  • Job placement services - provide assistance to drug dependent in obtaining work opportunities through open, self and sheltered employment.
