The instruments of the orchestra are divided into four sections which produce interweaving sounds

String section
The most important section in the orchestra, played by bowing or plucking the instruments to produce sounds
Violin
Soprano of the string family, the smallest string in the orchestra, high sound
Viola
Alto of the string family, looks like a violin but bigger in size, the "middleregister", darker, lower, and richer sound than violin
Cello
Tenor of the string family, warm, deep, mellow, clear, sweet, bright, rich, dull, and rumbling tone
String bass or double bass
Bass of the string family, one of the lowest sounding instruments in the orchestra
Harp
Sometimes included in the string family depending on the musical period when the music is played
Woodwind section
Originally made of wooden materials, now metal is used, sound is produced by blowing the mouthpiece of the instrument using either a single or double reed
Flute
Soprano of the woodwind family, has a warm and smooth tone in the lower register that can become brighter, clearer, and piercing in the higher register
Piccolo
Soprano, like a small flute but the sound is higher than the flute
Clarinet
Soprano tone and can produce a sound somewhat like that a bass, its tone can vary from a low dark to a brilliant high sound
Oboe
Has a bright soprano, tone, color, and nasal quality
Saxophone
A soprano instrument that can produce alto, tenor, and bass sounds
English horn
Alto in the woodwind family, looks like an oboe but the bottom looks like a pear-shaped bell
Bassoon
Comparable to a bass in the human voice, lower-pitched instrument that has a warm, dark, and reedy tone, "clown" in the group because it produces a low comical sound
Contrabassoon
Comparable to a bass in the human voice, lowest sounding instrument within the orchestra and is larger than a bassoon
Brass section
Important in producing loud and exciting sounds of the orchestra, the materials used are made of brass, the instruments produce sounds by buzzing the player's lips against the mouthpiece
Trumpet
Soprano, high and brilliant sound
French horn
Alto, lower and more mellow sound than the trumpet
Trombone
Tenor, deeper and darker tone than the french horn
Tuba
Bass of the brass family, dark, deep, and powerful sound
Percussion section
Acts as a rhythmic section of the orchestra, makes special sounds and adds excitement and color, the instruments in this section are shaken, scraped, or hit
Timpani
Can be played both as a rhythmic and melodic instrument
Chimes
Produce a very bright sound
Cymbals
Produce a clanging sound
Xylophone
Produces a variety of sounds such as wooden, bright, rattling, shrill, brittle, hollow, tinkling, and a clear sounds
