Cards (14)

  • Groundwater
    • Found underground in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand, and rock
    • Stored in and moves slowly through geologic formations of soil, sand and rocks called aquifers
  • In an aquifer, there is enough groundwater that it can be pumped to the surface and used for drinking water, irrigation, industry, or other uses
  • Tropical cyclones
Also called hurricanes or typhoons, depending on the region. A rapidly rotating storm that begins over tropical oceans, and they can vary in speed, size, and intensity. The second-most dangerous natural hazards, after earthquakes.
  • How tropical cyclones formed?
    1. Tropical Depression: A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 38 mph (33 knots) or less. The weakest tropical cyclones
    2. Tropical Storm: A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph (34 to 63 knots)
    3. Hurricane: A tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph (64 knots) or higher
  • The 3 main parts of tropical cyclones
    • Rains Bands
    • Eye
    • Eyewall
  • Rains Bands
    • Curved bands of clouds and thunderstorms that trail away from the eye wall in a spiral fashion. These bands are capable of producing heavy bursts of rain and wind, as well as tornadoes.
  • Eyewall
    • Consists of a ring of tall thunderstorms that produce heavy rains and usually the strongest winds. Changes in the structure of the eye and eyewall can cause changes in the wind speed, which is an indicator of the storm's intensity.
  • Thunderstorm
A storm with lightning and thunder
  • Thunder
    The sound caused by lightning
  • Lightning
The spark of electricity in the atmosphere or between the atmosphere and the ground
  • Lightning
    • The occurrence of a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground or within a cloud
    • Accompanied by a bright flash and typically also thunder
  • In-cloud lightning
Strikes don't pose a direct threat to you if you are outside during a thunderstorm, but they are a great warning sign when it comes to thunderstorms in general
  • Cloud to cloud lightning
Lightning travels from one cloud to another
  • Cloud-to-ground lightning
Do pose a direct threat to people, animals, and equipment outdoors
