Khrushchev

• Limitation: the reforms were unpopular and reversed in 1964
• Under Khrushchev, it was easier for working class students to go to university and increased the range of adult education courses
• Schools and universities were also subject to the ebb and flow of de-Stalinization eg Stalin's 'short course' was banned
• K ended the requirement for parents to pay for education after 15 and this opened higher education up to more pupils
• He reintroduced more vocational training and required students over 15 to spend time working in factories
• By 1960, the population was 212 million
• For the first time, the percentage of urban and rural dwellers was equal
• Without the threat of purges the party became even more dominant and very much the elite group in Soviet society
• Khurshchev made attempts to make living standards better for the rural population, reducing the gap in living standards for the first time
