Energy

Cards (19)

  • Energy is the ability to do work or cause a change
  • Energy exists in various forms and is essential for all universal processes including those that power our daily lives.
  • There are two main concepts of energy which are fission and fusion.
  • Fission is a nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei, releasing a large amount of energy.
  • Fusion is a nuclear reaction in which two or more atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a large amount of energy.
  • There are two main forms of energy which are kinetic and potential energy.
  • Kinetic energy is the energy an object possesses due to its movement or motion.
  • An example of kinetic energy is a swinging pendulum.
  • Potential energy is the stored or mechanical energy an object possesses due to its position or condition.
  • An example of potential energy is water in a dam.
  • Renewable energy sources are energy sources that are natural and can replenish or replace themselves quickly and dependably.
  • A sustainable resource is one that can meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
  • Renewable energy sources have many benefits such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, preserving natural resources, creating job opportunities, reducing energy costs long-term, improving public health and promoting energy security and independence.
  • Renewable energy sources similarly have disadvantages such as the high development costs, vulnerability to weather and climate events and the large space required for set-up.
  • Nonrenewable energy sources are energy sources that have a finite supply and cannot replenish or replace itself quickly.
  • Examples of renewable energy sources are: solar, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric, biomass energy.
  • Benefits of nonrenewable energy sources: facilities can be built anywhere, no radioactive waste, concentrated and can be found in relatively large amounts, reliable source of energy.
  • Disadvantages of nonrenewable energy sources: produces greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to climate change, nonrenewable, mining for them degrades environment, are polluting.
  • There are many issues with regard to get gender and energy such as:- the lack of energy- decision-making power of women, lack of representation in energy and other stem industries, and the lack of female leaders or mentorship programs.
