  • TAPE MEASURE - used in taking
    body measurements. It is usually made of
    fiberglass, which does not wear or tear easily.
  • SEWING GAUGE / SEAM GAUGE - Used to measure short spaces like
    buttonholes, hemlines, tucks, and pleats. It is about six inches in length with a sliding guide.
  • RULER - Measures 12 inches or 18 inches, it is used
    for measuring and cutting lines, aids in
    connecting lines, and in drawing straight seam
    lines.
  • YARDSTICK / METERSTICK - useful for marking hemlines and
    drawing long lines. It can be made of hardwood
    or metal and can be used to measure objects
    that are larger than paper or lengths up to a
    yard.
  • TAILOR’S CHALK - used as a marker on
    materials and is removed by brushing.
  • PENCIL - A marking tool used to draft a pattern
  • TRACING WHEEL - This is a very convenient tool if you have a
    pattern and want to transfer it onto the fabric.
    It is used along with carbon paper. This can be
    serrated or smooth edge.
  • DRESSMAKER’S CARBON PAPER - This is also called tracing paper. It transfers the tracing wheel’s markings onto the fabric.
  • FABRIC SHEARS/ BENT-HANDLED
    DRESSMAKER’S SHEARS - These are made of high-quality steel and
    carry a sharp cutting point. Shears are about 7-12 inches long and is mostly used in cutting different fabrics.
  • PINKING SHEARS - Are scissors that have blades which forms
    zigzag or scalloped edges creating decorative
    finishes on fabric edges.
  • Trimming Scissors – used for
    trimming, clipping threads; around 3-
    4 inches long
  • Embroidery Scissors - finely tapered
    blades that is around 4-5 inches. Both
    points are sharp and is good for
    working with fine details in delicate
    fabric and embroidery work.
  • Buttonhole Scissors – this is intended
    for making buttonholes
  • THREAD CLIPPERS - Are handy little spring- loaded cutting tool
    that allows for the snipping of threads. They
    are not designed to cut fabric.
  • SEAM RIPPER - Are specifically designed to remove stitches
    from seams, during modifications or as a
    result of an error.
  • TAILOR SQUARE OR “L” - Used to transfer measurements to the design
    pattern. It also divides the garment into the
    desired size. This has perfect squares and is
    good for straight lines and numbers. This may
    also serve as a tape measure.
  • HIP CURVE - necessary tool for making
    pattern as well as fitting adjustments at the
    hipline. This can also be used for making
    adjustments at the hemline.
  • FRENCH CURVE - This is used to shape armhole and neckline
  • PINCUSHION - holds the straight pins and
    needles to prevent accident while working.
  • NEEDLES - push the thread down through the
    material to form successive stitches. Various
    fabric weights require different needles
    especially for machine needles
  • SEWING NEEDLE THREADER - It helps to position the thread in the eye of the needle. It works by inserting the wire of the
    threader through the eye of the needle, then
    put the thread on the wire and remove the
    needle.
  • THIMBLE - A small hard pitted cup worn on the finger for
    protection while sewing and also helps push
    the needle.
  • PINS - Are used to keep fabric together before
    stitching. They keep the fabric temporarily in
    place when the patterns are attached and cut,
    or while sewing.
  • SEWING BOX - A compartmentalized container used to keep
    needed sewing tools and materials together.
  • FABRIC - Is the cloth used in making garments. The most
    common material for beginners is the Flour
    sack or catcha because they are very easy to
    handle.
  • THREAD - Used for assembling or designing pieces of a
    garment. Threads differ in size and color.
