France Up to 1530

• ·There was a renegotiation of the Treaty of Etaples in 1510, anti-war ministers such as Fox and Warham organised this.
• 1512 was the first French invasion, Ferdinand used this as a diversion, betrayal. Another French invasion in 1513, battle of the Spurs, minor win in which Henry captured Tournai.
• These invasions cost England a lot of money, France halted the pension granted in Etaples treaty from 1510.
• 1515 = Louis XII died, Francis I ascended to the throne and became a political rival to Henry.
• 1517 = Treaty of Cambrai between Charles V of Spain (and in future HRE), Maximilian HRE and France, England isolated.
• 1518 = Treaty of London, perpetual peace, organised by Wolsey and made Henry the peacemaker of Europe.
• Outcome of the 1518 Treaty of London = Tournai returned, pension returned, Albany out of Scotland.
• · 1520 = field of cloth of gold
• Conflict between Francis and Charles grew in 1521, Henry began to debate taking the side of Charles V.
• Ultimately unsuccessful invasions of France then happened in 1522 and 1523 following Henry's decision to side with Charles in the 1521 Treaty of Bruges
• 1527 = treaty of Westminster against Charles V as he had immense power following the 1527 sack of Rome where he began controlling the pope.
• Forced to make anti-imperial alliance with France, Treaty of Amiens in 1527 which was largely insignificant following the treaty of Westminster in 1527.
