The Learning Theory of Attachment

Cards (3)

  • Main predictions
The motivation to learn is due to drive reduction (the innate urge to fulfil the primary drives i.e. thirst and hunger). The emphasis of the formation of attachment is based around food- you love the person who feeds you; Cupboard love.
Also, attachment behaviour should increase steadily from birth.
  • Classical conditioning: creating the attachment

Association of the caregiver(NS) with food(UCS) results in pleasure (CR).
  • Operant conditioning: strengthening the attachment
Infant learns that crying, smiling brings positive response from adults (positive reinforcement). Adult learns that responding to cries bring relief from the noise (negative reinforcement).
Crying is positively reinforced by the caregiver; the caregiver receives negative reinforcement when crying stops.
