ACID AND BASE

Cards (21)

  • An acid is a solution that has an excess of H+ ions.
  • Acid come from the Latin word "acidus" which means "sharp" or "sour".
  • The more H+ ions, the more acidic the solution.
  • Properties of acid:
    1. tastes sour
    2. conduct electricity
    3. corrosive
    4. neutralized when reacted with a base
    5. some acids react strongly with metals to produce H2 gas
    6. turns blue litmus paper red
  • Corrosive, which means they break down certain substances
  • Uses of acids:
    1. acetic acid
    2. citric acid
    3. ascorbic acid
    4. sulfuric acid
    5. lead acid
  • Acetic acid = vinegar
  • Citric acid = lemon, limes, and oranges. It is in many sour candies.
  • Ascorbic Acid = vitamin C which your body needs to function.
  • Sulfuric Acid = is used in the production of fertilizers, steel, paints, and plastics.
  • Lead acid = car batteries (motolite)
  • A base is solution that has excess OH- ions.
  • Another name for base is alkali
  • The more OH- ions, the more basic the solution.
  • Properties of base:
    1. feel slippery
    2. taste bitter
    3. corrosive
    4. can conduct electricity (alkaline batteries)
    5. do not react with metals
    6. neutralized when reacted with an acid
    7. turns red litmus paper blue
  • Corrosive definition
A substance that can break down or eat away at other materials over time. This process is called corrosion.
  • Types of corrosive substances
Corrosive substances can be either acidic or basic in nature.
  • H+ ion = hydrogen ion or hydride ion
  • OH- = hydroxide ion, hydroxyl ion
  • RBBase - Red to Blue Base
  • BRA - Blue to Red Acid
