RP10-Preparation of organic solids and liquids, purity tests

Cards (8)

  • Organic solid (aspirin) equipment: conical flask, water bath, beaker, buchner filter, salicylic acid, ethanoic anhydride, concentrated sulfuric acid, cold water.
  • Organic solid (aspirin) set up: Add salicylic acid, ethanoic anhydride and concentrated sulfuric acid to a conical flask. Prepare a water bath and buchner filter.
  • Organic solid (aspirin) method: Swirl the mixture of salicylic acid, ethanoic anhydride and sulfuric acid and hold in a water bath at 60 degrees for 20 minutes. Add to cold water and wait for the aspirin to crystallise. Filter using buchner filtration and leave to dry.
  • Organic solid (aspirin) analysis: To measure the purity of the sample, measure the melting point either by using a melt station or by distillation. Aspirin's melting point is 135 degrees.
  • Organic liquid (ethyl ethanoate) equipment: anti bumping granules, condenser, pear shaped flask, water bath, ethanoic acid, ethanol, concentrated sulfuric acid, sodium carbonate, separating funnel, thermometer, beaker.
  • Organic liquid (ethyl ethanoate) production method: Add ethanol, ethanoic acid, concentrated sulfuric acid and a few anti bumping granules to a pear shaped flask and heat under reflux for 15 minutes.
  • Organic liquid (ethyl ethanoate) separation method: Pour the refluxed mixture into a separating funnel with some sodium carbonate solution, which neutralises unreacted acids and helps separate the ester. Add a stopper and invert and open the stopcock to release pressure several times. Remove the stopper and drain the aqueous layer, leaving the ethyl ethanoate.
  • Organic liquid (ethyl ethanoate) purification method: The ethyl ethanoate can be purified by distillation using anti bumping granules and a thermometer to monitor the temperature.
