    Throughout the 1950s
  • Rakosi's rule was extremely unpopular and lead to protests and riots
  • Rakosi was replaced

    A much more leniant leader who wanted to reform communism
  • Nagy also wanted Hungary to break free of the Warsaw Pact
  • This was not well received by the new Soviet leader Khrushchev (who replaced Stalin after his death)
  • Khrushchev's response
    1. Sent in the Soviet tanks
    2. Nagy was executed
    3. Hungary came under harsh communist rule once again
