  • Tony Sewell - Feminisation of Education

Schools do not nurture masculine traits such as competition and leadership. Instead they celebrate attentiveness and quiet methodical work, more associated with femininity.
  • Barbara Read - Teachers and Discipline

Criticises the attack on a feminised school environment. She identifies a Disciplinarian discourse (more male) and a Liberal discourse (more feminine) in teacher approach to discipline.
She studied 51 primary school teachers and found that most teachers used both discourses.
  • Mitsos and Browne - Decline of masculine manual work

Since the 1980's there has been a decline in manufacturing industries due to outsourcing to developing countries for cheap labour - This is due to globalisation of industry.
This has led to an identity crisis for men as there is little use for schooling if boys see their qualifications as useless if 'men's jobs' no longer existed
