distributions normal and skewed

Cards (7)

  • -          A negative skew is when the long tail is on the left side of the peek and most of the distribution is on the right and the mode is the highest point but the mean has moved to the left and the lower scoring participants have pulled the mean this way but the mode and the medium do not include all scores
  • -          In a positive skew the mode is at the highest point but the mean has moved to the right and the high scoring participants have pulled the mean to the right of the medium but the mode and medium are unaffected by high scores
  • -          A positive skew – is when the long tail is one the right side of the peak with most of the distribution being on the left
  • -          Skewed distribution is any distribution where the scores are not symmetrical – outliers can cause skewed distribution
  • -          A normal distribution is when the data is symmetrical and when plotted on a graph if forms a bell shape curve with as many scores below the mean are also above it – the distribution on the graph if 50/ 50 on wither side of the mean , mode or medium and most scores occur around the mean with fewer scores clusters as they move below it so graph looks more compact at the top and flows down looser
  • -          Distribution is a pattern made by a graph
  • -          When quantitative data is gathered and the frequency of a variable is measure it will be plotted on a bar chart or histogram an when plotted on a graph the data will form some kind of pattern and this pattern is called a distribution
