  • Production - the making of something, bringing a work (music, song, movie) to life.
  • Production is at the heart of art. While some contemporary artists foreground production as a tool, others use their work to explore ideas around production we might otherwise overlook.
  • Contemporary art craft expressions find inspiration in folk art. Folk art pieces are produced by indigenous people, which are utilitarian, as well as decorative. It uses plants that are abundant locally, such as buri (palm), pandan (sea grass leaves), abaca and piña (pineapple), or bamboo.

    1. Barong Tagalog - originated from the Spanish rule that makes Filipino men wear thin and transparent clothing to prevent them from stealing and carrying weapons. Also, the hems are not tucked in to mark their status as "indio". The fabric was made of piña, jusi, abaca, or banana.

    Ilocos - abel fabric designed with geometric patterns; useful for students
    Bacolod - pandan leaves are woven and can be tied with a leather to make bags of export quality
    Bicol - rattan as bag handles
    Tacloban - banig as little purses
  • Ikat is a style of weaving that uses dyeing process before the threads are woven to create a pattern or design; mostly practiced in Cordillera by the Ifugaos and ethnic groups in Mindanao.
  • Pearls are abundant in the southern part of the country. While natural materials such as stone, rocks, woods, sticks, etc. are used in the northern part of the country to make accessories.

    • Laguna - Abaca sandals with colorful beads, provides comfort and attractive design rather than bakya with high heels
    • Bohol - made of buri; thin and light, perfect for indoors and convenient for travelers.

    Bukidnon - abaca is woven into hats, baskets, and different types of containers
    Bacolod - pandan leaves made to trays

    Tapestries are wall decors made out of woven fabrics; common in Ilocos and Baguio City.
  • Patrick Gabutina’s creative decors are made of driftwood, dried grasses, and dried flowers.

    • believed to have magical powers; can be put on doors to ward off evil spirits.
    • Quezon - faces are painted with different geometric shapes and colors
    • Bacolod - theatrical, comic, colorful and combined with painted objects.
