Cortical regions

    Cards (8)

    • What is localisation?
When certain areas of the brain are responsible for specific functions and behaviours.
    • How many lobes is the cerebral cortex divided into?
      4
    • Frontal lobe
      • Located at the front of the brain.
      • Biggest part of the brain.
      • Makes up 40% of cerebral cortex in humans.
      • Controls high - level cognitive functions e.g. thinking and planning.
      • Contains the motor cortex which controls voluntary movements on the opposite side of the body.
    • Parietal lobe
      • Contains somatosensory cortex.
      • Processes sensory information from the skin e.g. temperature and pressure.
    • Temporal lobe
      • Contains auditory cortex.
      • Deals with sound info (mainly from opposite ear) e.g. volume and pitch.
      • Has a role in understanding language.
    • Occipital lobe
      • Located at the back of the brain.
      • Each lobe contains visual cortex.
      • Deals with visual information.
      • Everything is processed by the left visual cortex first.
    • What is the Broca's area?

The area of the brain responsible for speech production.
    • What is the wernicke's area?
The area of the brain responsible for understanding language.
