GCSE PE UNIT 1 - joints

Cards (4)

  • A joint is the place where two or more bones meet
  • Synovial joints are joints filled with fluid that surrounds cartilage
attached at the end of each of the bones that meet at the joint.
  • The structure of synovial joints is designed to reduce the risk of injury
    by containing:
A tough capsule that surrounds the joint, lined by a synovial
    membrane.
Ligaments joining bones to bones which prevent unnecessary
    movements and dislocations.
Synovial fluid that lubricates the joint is created in the capsule
which reduces friction and wear of the joint.
Further small bags of synovial fluid, known as bursae, also
surround the joint to prevent friction from the movement of
tendons across the surface of the joint.
  • There are 6 types of synovial joints
