Prometheus, chains and fire

Cards (4)

  • ‘Modern Prometheus’
In Greek mythology Prometheus stole fire from Zeus. As a result he was chained to a rock. Everyday, the vulture would swoop down to pull out and eat his ears and liver. Victor is a Promethean overreacher, making Frankenstein a cautionary tale. Him and the monster are both in a state of perpetual suffering- Victor lives in paranoia and the monster wants justice and love.
  •  ‘I thrust my hand into the live embers, but quickly drew it out with a cry of pain’
Monster has a Promethean identity and learns from his mistakes + acts humanely, direct contrast to Victor
  • Why does the monster burn down the DeLacey hovel?
He attemps to cleanse himself of the goodness to become a monster. He is also cleansing himself of the family he has adopted, causing him the most pain of all as a final rejection. Fire= cleansing
  • ‘and licked it with their forked and destroying tongues’
The hovel fire mirrors the forked tongues of Satan, reflecting how the monster identifies with him
