Macduff

    Cards (4)

    • Act 4 - "Let's make us medicines of our great revenge, To cure this deadly grief”
'Medicines' and 'revenge' are alike in their outcome- solving/ curing something. Macduff uses this idea, as the only way to help solve/ partially cure his insurmountable grief, is to make Macbeth accountable for his sins.
Thus, his violence is justified and he still remains the archetype of the avenging hero- motivated by revenge for a just cause
    • Act 5 - “I have no word; my voice is my sword”
This emphasises Macduff's heroic qualities, and draws on a key idiom - actions speak louder than words- Macbeth's ungodly actions are not worthy of words anymore, Macduff believes that order can only be restored when terminating his tyranny.
    • “ I have no words; my voice is my sword”
Violent metaphor : In employing a violent metaphor, Macduff contends that the restoration of Scotland's natural order necessitates physical violence. Thus, the initial upheaval, brought about by Macbeth's violent tyrannical means, mandates a similar force to rectify the natural order that has been disrupted.
    • Act 5 - “I have no words; my voice is my sword”
Macduff is the archetype (perfect- example) of the avenging hero, motivated by revenge, but with good intentions.
