Identify relationships between variables without having to manipulate behaviours so correlations can be used when it would be impossible/unethical to use an experiment. This can be used to suggest ideas for future research so it is useful.
Easy to analyse a correlation and see patterns are quantitative data is collected which is objective and can be plotted on a scatter graph and is scientific.
Weaknesses of Correlations
Cause and effect cannot be established and correlations only show relationships therefore we cannot make conclusions about whether one variable impacts another which reduces internal validity and insight.
Other unknown variables may have caused the relationship which lowersinternalvalidity as you don't get the full picture.
