Correlations

Cards (2)

  • Strengths of Correlations
    • Identify relationships between variables without having to manipulate behaviours so correlations can be used when it would be impossible/unethical to use an experiment. This can be used to suggest ideas for future research so it is useful.
    • Easy to analyse a correlation and see patterns are quantitative data is collected which is objective and can be plotted on a scatter graph and is scientific.
  • Weaknesses of Correlations
    • Cause and effect cannot be established and correlations only show relationships therefore we cannot make conclusions about whether one variable impacts another which reduces internal validity and insight.
    • Other unknown variables may have caused the relationship which lowers internal validity as you don't get the full picture.
