Monster's appearance and identity

  Victor’s proportionally large ego. The monster is now very dangerous, Victor will fall victim to his own hubris

  Reflective of the moon. impure, tainted, decay & disease
• ‘I selected his features as beautiful’


  Victor’s expectations of a beautiful creature violates nature as he has selected them
• ‘watery eyes’


  emotion from the beginning. Dismissed by Victor due to prejudice, he assumes the monster has no emotions
• ‘superhuman speed’ … ‘He bounded over the crevices in the ice which I had walked with caution’

  Victor can’t see aesthetic deformity from a distance. Victor feels safe but this is misplaced due to the monster’s strength. Victor gave him this, falls victim to his own hubris
• ‘I declared everlasting war’

  violence against creator
•  ‘insupportable misery’

  occupies role he has been given by society
• ‘filthy mass’

  Unclean. Mass refers to the futility of his existence
• ‘I cannot believe I am he whose thoughts were once filled with sublime and transcendent visions’


   the monster sees himself in the water and does not recognise the person that he sees back. Unlike Narcissus who falls in love with his reflection in the water
•  ‘the fallen angel becomes a malignant devil’


  satan had fellow fallen angels, the monster is alone
