Developed by Baddeley and Hitch, focusses on short-term storage of info and says STM isn't a unitary store
Working Memory Model
Central Executive - monitors incoming data and allocates to 'slave systems'
Phonological Loop - processes audio info, split into Phonological store (words you hear) and Articulatory process (repeats sounds while needed)
Visuo-Spatial Sketchpad - processes visual and spatial info, split into Visual cache (visual data) and Inner scribe (arrangement of objects in visual field)
Episodic Buffer - integrates info and maintains time-sequencing (records events)
Strength of WMM
KF had poor auditory STM but good visual STM, showing proof of separate stores
Strength of WMM
Baddeley et al did research into dual task performance. Participants who did a visual and verbal task had good results. When both tasks were visual/verbal results declined, because the tasks are competing for space in a slave system.
Weakness of WMM
Central executive is too vague, EVR had a cerebral tumour removed and did well on reasoning tasks but bad on decision-making, suggesting some of his CE worked and some didn’t
