  • National Party: governing party from 1948 to 1994
  • began in colonial times under Dutch Empire until 1795 when the British took over the Cape of Good Hope
  • was officially introduced after the general elections of 1948
  • inhabitants were classified into 4 racial groups: 1. whites 2. black 3. coloured 4. Indian
  • non-white South Africans were removed from their homelands and forced into segregated neighborhoods
  • one of the largest mass removals in modern history
  • the government segregated: 1. education 2. medical care 3. public facilities
  • black people were provided with services inferior to those of white
  • anti-apartheid leaders were imprisoned and the opposition was banned/forbidden
