Boko Haram

• Boko Haram = an Islamic sect founded in 2002 and believes that westernisation has corrupted the Nigerian government and wants to create an Islamic State based on Sharia Law
• Abubakar Shekau is known for his violent tactics such as suicide bombings and kidnappings.
• In 2015, Boko Haram pledged allegiance to ISIS (Islamic State) and changed its name to 'Wilayat Gharb Afriqiya' which means West African Province of the Islamic State.
• 2009 = first violent attack against the Nigerian government
• 2014 = Chibok schoolgirl abduction
• The Nigerian government hasn't implemented security measures to follow up on vulnerable states
• Nigeria has been criticised for not doing enough to protect civilians from attacks by Boko Haram
• 2012 = sent a car bomb to UN headquarters in Abuja city and caused 23 deaths and at least 100 injured
• 2015 = kidnapped 276 girls from their boarding school in Chibok, Nigeria
• 2018 = released video showing 110 of the Chibok girls still being held captive
• 2019 = 110 Chibok girls were freed as part of negotiations with the Nigerian government
• Boko Haram is a non-state actor threatening the sovereignty of Nigeria and Nigeria is struggling to protect it
• Politicisation of Human Rights - the international community have little political or economic interests to act
• The Nigerian governments use of military power only escalated the conflict
