Venezuela

• The crisis began due to fall in oil prices and due to the poor economic policy thus this fall in prices led to high levels hyperinflation within the country
• Inflation was at 10,000% by 2018
• Maduro's government has been accused of human rights abuses including torture and extrajudicial killings.
• in 2016 President Maduro only had a 20% approval rating and thus moved to authoritarian means to maintain power an example of this is that he dissolved the Supreme Court
• 2018 = the elections were considered illegitimate by the international community and South American IGOs
• 2018 = poverty reached 90%
• 2019 = Donald Trump signed executive order to impose a total economic embargo against Venezuela
• approximately 5.6 million people have migrated fro Venezuela however they are often refused entry at the US border thus their human right to seek refuge is not being upheld
• 2020 = Robert F Kennedy HR organisation documented 724 enforced disappearances between 2018 and 2019
• hospitals are lacking about 98% of medical supplies
• The country has international debts that date back to 2004 - the economic situation is dire - can't afford to fund healthcare or education
• Due to poor economy its led to an increase in crime rates and human rights abuses
• Liberalism = governments responsibility to uphold the human rights and cooperation between states to prevent human rights abuses
• Realism = states act in self interest and will only cooperate if it benefits them
• Marxist theory = state power is used by capitalists to exploit workers, therefore it is the duty of the proletariat (workers) to overthrow the bourgeoisie (capitalists)
• The country is classed as a failed state
• Failed states are characterised by weak institutions, high levels of corruption, poverty, violence and political instability
