• Lorenz divided goose eggs into 2 batches - 1 batch hatched with biological mother and other placed in incubator, Lorenz the first thing they saw
• incubator group followed Lorenz
• critical period - 4-25 months after hatching, irreversible
• AO3 - can't generalise to human behaviour, human parent more emotional reaction to their offspring
• AO3 - opposing research - Guiton et al. Chickens would imprint on yellow gloves if first moving object they saw, would try and mate with it later. BUT not irreversible, could learn to prefer mating with other chicken
